MediaMath

Sr. Product Director, Identity Management

What I took to Made In Motion

Scale and privacy. MediaMath handled three million requests per second at 30 milliseconds of latency, on top of a graph database that mapped nearly every user on the internet. It taught me what uptime, reliability, and scale actually require in a near-real-time system. At the same time I was working with the W3C on how cookies should work in a world of privacy, and implementing GDPR in Europe and the California Consumer Privacy Act at home. Made In Motion holds a business's customer data, so both lessons apply: it has to stay up and fast, and it has to treat that data with care.

I led the implementation of Connected ID, MediaMath's re-architected cross-device identity graph. The system answered three million requests per second with about 30 milliseconds of latency, on top of a graph database that mapped nearly every user on the internet. It doubled the number of digitally addressable users in cross-device, which doubled biddable advertising opportunities.

It was my first time building in an environment with near-real-time requirements at that scale, and it changed how I think about uptime and reliability. I also represented MediaMath in IAB and W3C working groups, helping formulate how cookies and identity should work as the web moved toward privacy, and led our implementation of GDPR in Europe and the California Consumer Privacy Act.
