What I took to Made In Motion

Thomson was where I first managed teams much larger than the four or five people I was used to, and where I really learned how to manage people. I made plenty of mistakes doing it, and those mistakes were the education. Twenty years of managing people since then, starting here, is something I carry into Made In Motion every day: how to hire, how to give people room, how to recover when I get it wrong.

I came to Thomson when it acquired NewsEdge, where I had been working. It was my first time inside a mid- to large-size company. Over four years I was promoted from software architect to senior director and site leader, running a global team of 25 engineers and five product leads. We grew feeds added per month by 60% while cutting costs 25%, and I established an offshore development team.

I still stay in touch with at least a few people from every company I've worked at. From Thomson, one person stands out: Tom Karanian. We got off to a rocky start, but I ended up learning so much from him, and I'm forever grateful.
