The 2018 playbook will not work this time. In 2018, Google had the luxury of declining defense work. In 2026, every major lab is competing for DOD contracts and Anthropic, OpenAI, and Palantir are happy to absorb the demand. Pichai will sign. The strategic read: the AI labor market has flipped. Engineers who can quit over ethics in 2018 cannot replicate that leverage now that 80,000 of their peers are looking for work.
