Anthropic Hits $30 Billion Revenue Run Rate, Surpasses OpenAI

Anthropic disclosed a $30 billion annualized revenue run rate, exceeding OpenAI's $25 billion reported in February. The company also announced plans to secure 3.5 gigawatts of next-generation Google TPU compute starting in 2027. Separately, Anthropic ended free Claude subscriptions for third-party agentic tools, requiring per-token API fees instead.

The revenue number matters less than what it signals: the enterprise market has picked its horse, and it is not the one with the loudest consumer brand. Claude Code going from zero to the most-used AI coding tool in eight months is not a fluke. It is what happens when you optimize for the people who actually build software, not the people who tweet about it. But the move to charge for third-party agentic tool access is the one to watch. Anthropic is signaling that the free-rider era for AI agents is over. If you have been building workflows on top of Claude's API assuming current pricing holds, budget accordingly. The compute bill for 3.5 gigawatts of TPUs has to come from somewhere, and that somewhere is you.
