Anthropic in Early Talks to Buy Inference Chips from UK Startup Fractile
What Happened
The Information reports Anthropic is in early discussions with Fractile for inference-specific chips. The deal would mark another step in Anthropic's compute diversification strategy as inference demand grows faster than training. Fractile's pitch is dramatically lower cost-per-token for large model serving.
My Take
Inference is where the real money is, and where the bottleneck is moving. Training compute gets the headlines, but every successful AI product becomes an inference business within twelve months of launch. Bet on the silicon companies that solve inference economics — they'll be more strategically valuable than the model labs in five years. For Anthropic specifically, this also reduces dependency on Google and AWS, which becomes important if either ever decides to compete more aggressively with Claude.
