Anthropic Shifts Enterprise Billing to Pay-Per-Token — The Flat Fee Era Is Over

Effective April 4, Anthropic moved Claude Enterprise from flat subscriptions (up to $200/user/month) to a $20/user base fee plus per-token consumption charges for Claude, Claude Code, and Cowork. API rates range from $1/$5 per million tokens for Haiku 4.5 to $5/$25 for Opus 4.6. Anthropic cited a compute crunch as the driver. One licensing consultant estimates heavy users could see costs double or triple; several IT executives are tracking renewal impacts.

This is the most consequential AI pricing move of the year. Every enterprise CFO who budgeted flat-rate Claude costs now has a variable line item that scales with adoption — which is exactly what happens when your employees actually use the tool. The irony: the companies getting the most value from Claude will pay the most, creating an incentive to ration usage rather than encourage it. Smart enterprises will respond by building internal usage dashboards and prompt-efficiency guidelines. The real winner here might be open-source models — every per-token invoice is a reminder that self-hosted alternatives exist.
