Anthropic Ships Claude Code Desktop Overhaul and Cloud-Based Routines

Anthropic released a redesigned Claude Code desktop with a sidebar for managing multiple sessions, drag-and-drop layout customization, an integrated terminal, file editing, and HTML/PDF preview. Separately, the company launched routines — automations configured once and triggered on schedules, via API, or by GitHub events — that run on Anthropic's cloud infrastructure. Routines are available in research preview for Pro through Enterprise plans with daily run limits of 5 to 25.

Routines are the more consequential announcement, though they'll get less attention than the UI refresh. Anthropic is building a persistent compute layer around Claude Code — one where the AI runs tasks on their servers, on their schedule, using their infrastructure. That's not a developer tool anymore; it's a managed-services business. If routines gain traction, Anthropic will have recurring cloud revenue that looks more like AWS than a chatbot subscription. The desktop redesign is polish; the routines are a business model pivot.
