Boston Dynamics Loses CEO and CTO Amid Humanoid Race
What Happened
Multiple senior executives departed Boston Dynamics, including CEO Robert Playter and CTO Aaron Saunders. The exodus comes as Hyundai pushes the company to accelerate humanoid robot production and competition intensifies from Figure, Tesla Optimus, Apptronik, and Chinese entrants.
My Take
Boston Dynamics has the best robotics engineering reputation in the world and is somehow losing the humanoid race, which tells you the competition has shifted from mechanical engineering to AI control models. Whoever solves the manipulation-and-reasoning stack with off-the-shelf hardware wins, and that's a software problem now. Expect Hyundai to either spin Boston Dynamics out or partner deeply with a frontier AI lab within twelve months — they cannot win this internally.
