Starting April 20, providers of general-purpose AI models must publish training data summaries, comply with EU copyright law, and maintain technical documentation available to regulators. My Take
The compliance burden is real but the more interesting effect is selection pressure — smaller labs and open-source projects are quietly geo-blocking European users rather than comply, which hands Europe to the incumbents it claims to fear. If you're a European business, your choice of AI vendor just got narrower, and your negotiating leverage dropped. The unlock is to specify AI-Act-compliance as a procurement requirement now, before the market consolidates and prices rise.
