Google Announces "Googlebook" Ahead of I/O
What Happened
Googlebook positions Gemini as the OS-level interaction layer rather than an app. Features include Magic Pointer for contextual AI suggestions anywhere on screen, custom widget bundling of apps, and deep Android phone handoff. Top OEMs are signed as launch partners for a fall release.
My Take
Google is trying to do what Microsoft tried with Copilot+ PCs and what Apple is rumored to be doing with M5 — make AI the reason you replace your laptop. The honest assessment: nobody has bought a laptop because of AI yet, and Googlebook won't change that in 2026. But it does establish a category for 2027–2028 when models are good enough to be the primary interaction surface. For executives: don't refresh your fleet for AI laptops yet; the actually-useful version is two generations away. Pilot, don't roll out.
