Google Pushes Gemini to the Center of Android
What Happened
Google is deeply integrating Gemini into Android, with the assistant able to move across apps, interpret on-screen content and complete multi-step tasks that normally require jumping between services. The push is explicitly timed to get ahead of Apple's anticipated AI overhaul of its own platform.
My Take
This is the agent war moving from chat windows to operating systems — the highest-stakes battlefield there is. Whoever owns the OS-level agent owns the default, and defaults win. Google's structural advantage is that Android already runs on billions of devices; Apple's is a more controllable, premium user base. The contrarian worry for Google: the same cross-app intelligence that delights users also lets Gemini bypass individual apps entirely, gutting the developer ecosystem Android depends on. Google is about to discover whether its platform partners view Gemini as a feature or a threat.
