Google Releases Gemma 4 — Open Weights Built to Run on Phones and Laptops

Google introduced Gemma 4, a new open-weights series designed for on-device use. The lineup includes a 26B parameter mixture-of-experts model and a 31B dense model engineered to run on consumer phones, laptops, and desktops. Google is positioning Gemma 4 against other open-weight releases while keeping its frontier Gemini line proprietary.

Open-weights releases from Google are usually read as charity for researchers, but Gemma 4 is really a moat play. By flooding the on-device tier with a free-to-use option, Google undercuts smaller open-weight labs and makes it harder for any rival to charge for local inference. The prediction: within six months, at least two well-funded open-weight startups will pivot to fine-tuning services because base-model economics collapsed under them.
