Microsoft 365 Copilot Agents Go Live in Word, Excel, PowerPoint — On by Default

Microsoft flipped agentic capabilities on across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for all 365 Copilot customers. The agents can create full documents and multi-step analyses without step-by-step prompting, representing the biggest default-on behavior change for Office since the ribbon.

"On by default" is the quietly radical part. Microsoft is betting that knowledge workers will accept agentic coworkers faster if they don't have to opt in — and once the default flips, adoption curves go vertical. The risk for enterprises is governance debt: sensitive documents being drafted, shared, and cited by agents without logging or review. CIOs who don't have an agent policy written by June will be writing an incident report by September. This is the moment to stand up an agent governance council, not a pilot.
