Microsoft Quietly Deprecates GitHub Copilot Classic in Favor of Agent Mode

The classic Copilot product, which pioneered inline code suggestions in 2021, is being merged into Copilot Agent Mode by October. Microsoft said agent-mode usage now exceeds classic autocomplete by 3-to-1 among active developers, and pricing will consolidate into a single $25/month tier with agent-action metering above a base quota.

The move from completion to agent is the single most important shift in developer tools since the IDE, and most engineering leaders are still budgeting for the old model. If your 2026 engineering plan assumes "every dev gets Copilot at $19/month and productivity goes up 10%," rewrite it. The real question is how many hours of agent time each developer needs, which is a usage-based cost that can run 5-10x higher for senior engineers doing complex refactors. Plan for variable cost, not seat cost.
