OpenAI Launches Workspace Agents to Replace Custom GPTs
What Happened
OpenAI announced workspace agents as part of launch week. Teams can build shared agents that handle reports, code, and messages, run autonomously in the cloud, and operate within organizational permissions. Available in research preview for Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers plans, free until May 6 when credit-based pricing begins. Agents can be invoked inside ChatGPT or Slack.
My Take
Custom GPTs were a failed product — fewer than 1% of users ever created one and retention was miserable. Workspace agents reposition the feature as team infrastructure rather than personal toys, which is the right move. The risk is pricing: credit-based billing is how Anthropic drove developers to local models. If OpenAI prices aggressively here, agents become the new default API surface for mid-market companies; if they overcharge, this launch accelerates the "bring your own model" trend we're already seeing.
