OpenAI Ships Codex Everywhere
What Happened
The May 15 release expands Codex from a developer-tool surface into a portable coding agent usable from IDE, CLI, web, and mobile. It's part of OpenAI's broader push to embed agentic coding into enterprise pipelines and follows the launch of OpenAI Deployment Company, a new $4B-backed unit selling embedded engineering teams to enterprises.
My Take
The "anywhere" pitch is about lock-in, not convenience. Once your engineers have Codex in five surfaces, switching to Claude Code or Gemini means retraining five workflows. The interesting move is the Deployment Company — OpenAI is quietly turning into Accenture with a model attached. That's a higher-margin, stickier business than API tokens, and it cuts off the consulting firms before they build their own stacks. Expect Anthropic and Google to copy this within 90 days.
