OpenAI Ships GPT-5.5 With 1M Context and Doubled Pricing
What Happened
GPT-5.5 rolled out to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers and to the Codex coding assistant. OpenAI claims meaningful gains on tool-heavy ambiguous workflows and deeper research tasks. The pricing jump signals confidence — or compute scarcity — and pushes premium reasoning workloads further into the "is this worth it" zone for most production use cases.
My Take
Doubling price on a same-generation refresh is a tell. Either OpenAI is constrained on Blackwell capacity and rationing demand, or they've concluded enterprise buyers are inelastic at this tier. Both interpretations argue for routing 80% of traffic to cheaper models and reserving GPT-5.5 only for the 20% where it measurably wins. Build a router now or watch your AI cost line double silently over the next two quarters.
