Schneier: How Dangerous Is Anthropic's Mythos AI?

Schneier's May 14 post examines Mythos, Anthropic's model tuned for vulnerability research. Researchers recently used it to discover a memory corruption flaw in Apple's M5 kernel. The post argues we're entering an era where the same tool defenders rely on materially accelerates attackers, and that policy hasn't caught up.

Schneier is right that this is dual-use, but the framing misses the asymmetry. Defenders have to find every bug; attackers only need one. So a model that doubles both sides' productivity helps attackers more — until defenders run it continuously against their own code, which most won't because of cost and culture. The honest near-term outcome: a one-to-two year window where well-resourced attackers eat the lunch of mid-tier security teams. Companies should be auditing their stack with Mythos-class tools now, not after the breach.
