Schneier: Mythos Restricted Access Is a Security Asymmetry Problem
What Happened
In an April 17 essay, Schneier critiques the "Mythos Preview" model — capable of finding and exploiting software vulnerabilities — for being available only to a small set of well-resourced organizations. He argues this leaves academic researchers and smaller defenders without parity, and questions Anthropic's silence on false positive rates.
My Take
Schneier is right but the incentives won't fix this. Anthropic has zero commercial reason to give academic researchers free access to a model that can identify zero-days in production software. The result is a two-tiered security regime: Fortune 500 companies and adversarial nation-states will both have access through different channels, and everyone in the middle won't. Mid-market CISOs should assume their attack surface is now being scanned by capabilities they can't afford to deploy defensively.
