Sora App Shuts Down Today

OpenAI is winding down the Sora consumer app effective today, with the developer API following in September. The market for AI video has consolidated around Google's Veo 3.1 (with a new Lite tier), Kuaishou's Kling 3.0, ByteDance's Seedance 2.0, and emerging entrant HappyHorse-1.0. OpenAI has not announced a replacement product.

Sora's retreat is the first meaningful product death in the foundation-model era — and it's a useful reminder that being early to a category does not equal winning it. OpenAI clearly concluded video isn't worth the GPU opportunity cost when text-and-agent margins are higher. Expect more strategic pruning across labs as compute scarcity forces ruthless prioritization. For creators: lock in workflows on Veo or Kling now, because the consolidation isn't over.
