My Take
This is the most honest org-design move I've seen in 2026, and it's going to get copied. The pure-manager role was always a productivity tax that companies tolerated because coordination was hard. AI collapsed the coordination cost. What replaces it is uncomfortable for a generation of MBA-track managers who built careers on running 1:1s and writing performance docs. If you manage and don't ship, the next 24 months will be brutal. If you ship and lead, you just got a raise.
