Xiaomi Open Sources MiMo-V2.5 Under MIT License
What Happened
The models are multimodal, support up to 1 million token context windows, and rank among the most efficient open models for agentic workflows. Permissive MIT licensing means commercial use without restriction. The release joins Qwen, DeepSeek, and Falcon in the increasingly crowded open-weights tier from Chinese labs.
My Take
The open-source AI race is now functionally a Chinese race. Meta's Llama has gone quiet, Mistral has pivoted toward enterprise, and the steady drumbeat of frontier-adjacent open releases is coming from Alibaba, DeepSeek, and now Xiaomi. The strategic implication: enterprises that want sovereign AI without paying frontier prices increasingly have to choose between US-controlled APIs and Chinese-licensed weights. That is a procurement and policy headache nobody has a clean answer to yet.
